- Don’t interrupt the upgradation process: The first thing you must know when updating the ASUS router firmware is that the upgradation process shouldn’t be interrupted. This is because it may brick your device temporarily or even permanently.
- Have a stable power input and wired connection: A stable power and wired connection is necessary since it may interrupt the firmware updating processor. This way, such an interruption can brick the device, as mentioned in tip# 1.
- Update only the officially released firmware: It is suggested to avoid installing the firmware update, which isn’t officially released or released but is a leaked version. This is risky to install since it can cause security risks and affect performance.
- Double-check the firmware file: Don’t install the firmware file of one router model to the other. Also, ensure that it’s corrupted or damaged in any way when updating the firmware manually. You must consider these cautions before starting to install.
How To Update ASUS Router Firmware?
1. Update Via Web GUI or Auto-Update
The first and most effective way to update the ASUS router firmware is by using ASUS’s official Web GUI. Remember, some experts also call it auto-update since we use the auto-updated functionality to update the latest software from the official web platform, so don’t get confused here. This method is suitable when ASUS has officially launched some updates and you want to upgrade your router. Follow the following process broken into simple steps you ease.
Step 1: Set Up the Wireless Router Using the Wired Connection.
- Connect the wireless router’s AC adaptor’s one end to the DC-IN slot while the other power-input end to the wall socket or power outlet.
- Use the bundled network cable to connect your computer to the router’s LAN outlet by plugging the appropriate ends into the correct slots.
Step 2: Login into the ASUS Router Web GUI.
- Click the following link, [https://router.asus.com/], to launch the required web page.
- Enter your credentials, username and password, and click sign in.
Step 3: Check For the Available Updates.
- Once you’re logged in, navigate to Administration > Firmware Update.
- Click the Check button to inspect whether any new update is available.
Note: This method will end here for the user who found no new update up to this point and see a message like “The router’s current firmware is the latest version“. Suppose you found one. In such a case, keep following this method to install it.
Step 4: Install the New Updates.
- If a new firmware update is available, click Firmware Upgrade and confirm for an automatic update if a confirmation window pops up.
- Let the upgradation process be completed. The router LED may turn on and off multiple times. Wait until the upgrade is completed and the router completes the rebooting process.
Step 5: Confirm the Recently Installed Firmware Upgrade.
- The last and final step is to confirm that the upgrade is complete.
- Login into the ASUS admin panel using step# 2 and visit the update window using step# 3.
Click the Check button. If you see a message like “The router’s current firmware is the latest version“, the new firmware update is installed and working correctly.
2. Update Via ASUS Router Mobile App
Another way to upgrade the ASUS Router firmware is by using a mobile-based application called ASUS Router App for iOS and Android devices. If your router is compatible with this, you can use it to update the firmware without doing anything to the router.
Step 1: Make the ASUS Router App Ready.
- Connect your mobile phone to the same router.
- Install the app if it isn’t on your mobile phone.
- If it’s already installed on your mobile phone, open it.
Step 2: Check For the Firmware Update From the App.
- Go to Settings > Firmware Upgrade.

3. Manually Download and Update
The third and last method on the list is manually upgrading the ASUS router firmware. The process is simple, but you must find your router’s appropriate firmware from ASUS’s official website. I’m assuming that you have downloaded the file for the latest firmware for your device and unzipped it at a known location on your computer. The next process of the manual firmware update is given as follows:
